What do Bell Bottoms and Obesity have in Common?

Bell Bottoms. I love them! They are hands down my favorite style. I will rock these bell bottom jeans any day of the week. Your genes have style too and a personality to boot. No really, lets take a moment to see how the genes we are dealt are as changeable as our jeans we wear on the outside. So you have genes you are born with them, they have expressed and that expression is you. Following me so far?

Each little gene in your body comes equipped with a handy little dimmer switch. Similar to a light, when you turn the genes dimmer switch on high something will express or when you turn the gene’s switch on low, that expression will be turned off. So for like, Ever, we have said, I have bad teeth it’s just my genes. I have a family full of heart disease, it’s in my genes. Science has shown us this way of thinking is the way of the past, like dinosaur thinking. You have genes and they are not set in stone. Earth-shaking cool!!

So how can you move those dimmer switches? With your environment , mood, stress levels, your food and all those good things. All the things that comes around us effectively have some say in how the dimmer gets moved. So let’s talk about obesity, there are many many different contributors, yet each of these help to move that dimmer switch a little more on. Then you will have fully expressed gene for obesity turned on. Well what happens when you have this going on and you are pregnant. With everything you eat, how you sleep, how you deal with stress and so on you are helping to program that little baby by having some genes turned on or off.

This is called epigenetics. Two thirds of your gene expression is influenced by things that we can control and 1/3 is just the genes you inherited from your family. So you see you have the power with every single forkful to tell your body what can and cannot be expressed. Did you realize that you had so much power for your future?
