Candles, we love them this time of year. Starting in the Fall throughout the dark winter evenings I love to have candles lit. It makes the room feel cozy and delivers just the right amount of ambiance. So in the spirit of the Halloween season, are candles a trick or treat?
Most are well a trick! Wait, what? Yep, it’s sad, but true, candles are regulated as personal care products in the United States, under the Personal Care Act. This Act is full of loop holes and has not been updated since 1938! How’s that for a scary and true Halloween story. The trick my friends, is that the ingredients most candles are made from create toxic air for us to breathe inside our homes. Most candles are made from paraffin, a petroleum waste which releases a carcinogenic soot as it burns, potentially causing respiratory issues and cancer. In addition to that they are filled with synthetic fragrence, which can any combination of over 800+ difference chemicals, so you don’t actually know what you are truly burning. Based on the current law, the word fragrance, can be used in place of the actual chemical(s). What is the synergistic affects of all of these synthetic scents mixed into that Carmel Apple Pumplin Candle scent? Who knows?!?! It has NEVER been tested. We don’t want to be filling your humble abode with toxic soot and dangerous chemicals for you to breathe!! Nope, nope, nope.
And now for a treat, not all candles are made this way. There are a few companies, like this one, Gold +Ivy, who take the time to do it right. They source soy wax, cotton wicks, and phthalate free oils and make everything by hand. They take the time to carefully blend the scents with essential oils, never anything fake or dangerous. I love the sample set as a way to try all the scents, It’s very hard for me to pick a fav! I will happlily be burning candles this winter without having to worry about what it is adding to my home. Don’t you just love health swaps that take away the stress so you can worry about other things?!?!
