Are Your Pants Ruining Your Health?

I love to wear workout pants…almost daily in the winter time. You may or may not be aware that many of the “work out” type leggings are made with plastic, PFAS (aka forever chemicals) and other health contaminants. Your skin happens to be one of your largest organs (2nd largest actually, with connective tissue being the largest) . Your skin absorbs what is on it or what it is next to for hours on end.

 

Don’t believe me on how serious this is? Just take a moment to ponder nicotine patches, birth control patches and sunscreen. All are applied topically and studies show they work by get a substance into the blood. ( he first two examples anyways) Separate studies have shown that the chemicals within sunscreen can be found in the blood a short time later…and this we don’t want. That’s how permeable your skin is.

What you put on your skin soaks in… EVERYTHING you put on it soaks in…

Your skin is next to and absorbing anything within the fabric that is on it. Enter- your clothes, laundry soap and any textile materials used in production.

Two quick ways to make a significant impact is to change out the fabrics that are against your skin the most- your bed sheets (hello 8-12 hours PER NIGHT) and your undies. I am adding workout pants into this undies categories, because you are typically wear them as tight fitting, long term and when sweating, so your pores are opening up.  When your pores open up, things can more easily be absorbed. However don’t forget that absorption is happening all the time. Secondly, we don’t want these chemicals to be near your reproductive organs!! (Especially important with children, teens (!) and people of child bearing age)

With such an increase in fertility issues, you’ve gotta wonder if part of it is due to the chemicals that are holding the family jewels…literally!

So I’ve been testing for you! Yes, that’s what I do.

SHEETS

Aim for 3 fabric types, 100% organic cotton, linen or wool. 

In the summer- we aim for linen sheets HERE or HERE OR 100% organic cotton sheets  HERE and HERE.  I have to say that the linen sheets feel so luxurious, I mean like really a treat!  The cotton sheets when line dried in the summer feel crisp and cool. 

 In the winter we use 100% organic cotton flannels HERE and HERE. OR  100% wool HERE or HERE.  We keep our house cool at night, as in VERY cool, 62* to be exact. Great sleeping temp, snuggling down in these sheets feels spectacular! 

UNDIES/YOGA PANTS

100% organic cotton yoga/workout pants. I found them from PACT. You can find there HERE. I really like these pants, I was worried that they wouldn’t be tight like other big brand stores, but I was wrong. They fit great and are breathable for your body. I wear these all day!

Adult 100% organic cotton undies- boxers, briefs, undies and thongs. These are also from PACT. These also are breathable and keeping the chemicals away from your special parts. HERE   I also have found and love wool undies – check those out HERE.  These are not at all what you would think, they are not itchy. Wool is thermogenic, which means they keep your cool when warm and warm when cold.  Wool is also naturally odor repellant. 

Organic Kids undies and boxers:  HERE  I do have the stress that these are incredibly important. Their little bodies are growing to quickly, we need to keep chemicals away from their body especially their reproductive organs. We, as mothers, are now in charge of protecting fertility.

With all of these sites, they offer both regular and organic products, make sure that the ones you are purchasing are the organic options- it’s worth it! Better for the planet, the soil and you!
